RESTON, Va.-Nextel Communications Inc. launched its Wireless GPS Platform, which the carrier said would extend location-based services to a broader base of users.
Nextel noted the platform provides large corporate and government customers as well as solution providers with a custom, server-based solution to “location-enable” their existing internal applications. The applications are designed to support all Nextel assisted global positioning system devices, as well as both Java and non-Java enabled handsets.
Verizon Wireless announced earlier this month that it planned to launch location-based services beginning in the third quarter of this year, and Sprint Corp. recently introduced a handful of business-focused location services including driving directions through its 411 service.
