Infineon releases reference design for low-cost handsets

MUNICH, Germany-Infineon Technologies AG announced sample availability of its first reference design for low-cost handsets.

The company said costs for GSM handsets with short message service functionality could be cut in half, to below $20, using its new ULC reference platform that is based on a single-chip GSM solution. The platform provides all the electronic hardware and software components needed for dual-band handsets operating in the GSM 900/1800 and GSM 850/1900 bands, said the company. It includes a single-chip GSM radio/baseband, other radio-frequency components, power supply, memory, operating system, hardware drivers, GSM protocol stack and a reference Man Machine Interface.

Volume production is expected to begin in the first quarter of next year.
