LONDON-Third-generation subscribers now number more than 50 million, according to the UMTS Forum.
The group said UMTS/W-CDMA subscribers account for about 33 million of that total worldwide. The group said it based its figures on published industry statistics and internal data from its membership.
Japan continues to lead the W-CDMA market with 16.5 million W-CDMA customers, representing more than half of all UMTS users. Italy follows Japan with 6.75 million customers on its four UMTS networks. The United Kingdom ranks third with about 4 million customers, according to the group.
