Manx Telecom to launch HSDPA network Nov. 1

DOUGLAS, Isle of Man-O2, Manx Telecom and Lucent Technologies Inc. announced that Europe’s Isle of Man will have a commercial HSDPA network by Nov. 1, providing mobile high-speed data services based on Lucent’s UMTS/HSDPA and Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem solutions.

The companies said the third-generation network will provide full coverage to the island, which is located in the Irish Sea between Ireland and England.

“This project highlights O2’s continued leadership in the introduction of enhanced next-generation communications solutions,” said Dave Williams, chief technology officer at O2. “The impending commercial launch of Europe’s first HSDPA network and future introduction of IMS-enabled services here on the Isle of Man demonstrates our commitment to providing our subscribers with the most innovative services.”

Isle of Man often serves as a proving ground for new wireless technologies.

Manx Telecom is a subsidiary of O2.
