SEATTLE-RealNetworks Inc. is targeting businesses, governmental agencies and educational institutions by mobilizing its Helix technology.
The company unveiled the newest version of its Helix Server Unlimited, which is designed to deliver streaming content to both fixed-line and wireless devices. The updated server supports 3GPP technology, allowing business customers to stream content to mobile phones, personal computers and other platforms.
Helix supports RealAudio and RealVideo-as well as Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Media, Apple Computer Inc.’s QuickTime and MPEG-4 formats-from a single server. The server is compatible with Windows and Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Solaris platforms, as well as Linux and Unix operating systems.
Cingular Wireless L.L.C. uses the Helix Online TVTM application to deliver its interactive mobile TV service. Real said it expanded its Helix offering in response to demand from enterprise customers who already use its streaming technology.
“Whenever we have asked our customers what they’re interested in doing, many of them say mobile,” said Janinne Brunyee, Real’s senior director of mobile enterprise. “We basically upgrade existing customers who have the right service SKUs. For the new version, the incremental cost is very small.”
