NENA stats point to E-911 divide between cities, rural areas

WASHINGTON-More than two-thirds of the nation’s population has access to enhanced 911 service, largely because it is being deployed in urban areas faster than in rural communities, according to figures posted earlier this month by the National Emergency Number Association. Howver, more than half of the nation’s counties cannot pinpoint where a wireless call takes place.

“The 911 community and wireless industry can be proud of reaching this benchmark. However, much work still needs to be done to provide this life-saving service in the significantly high number of counties (57.3 percent), predominantly rural, where it is still not available. The public needs and deserves wireless E-911 regardless of where they live or where they may visit or travel through,” said NENA President David Jones.

In announcing the statistics, NENA gave examples in Wisconsin, where immediate rescues were possible after wireless E-911 was deployed.
