Kyocera goes QWERTY with Strobe

LAS VEGAS-Kyocera Wireless Corp. unveiled its Strobe handset, which the company said is designed to simplify messaging and e-mail functions.

The candy-bar-style CDMA phone opens lengthwise and includes a second color display and full QWERTY keyboard inside. Kyocera said the handset includes a feature that allows users to switch back and forth between open and closed mode as often as they need to without disrupting the phone’s basic functionality.

The Strobe also includes a VGA camera, WAP 2.0 browser, built-in polyphonic ring tones, screen savers and caller alerts. Other features include a contact directory, voice-activated dialing, a scheduling tool, calculator, alarm clock, stopwatch, tip calculator, countdown timer and voice memos.

The handset is expected to be available globally in the second quarter.
