Qualcomm signs Intelsat for MediaFlo transmissions

PEMBROKE, Bermuda-Qualcomm Inc.’s mobile TV subsidiary, MediaFlo USA Inc., signed an agreement with Intelsat to use capacity on the satellite operator’s Intelsat Americas-8 satellite.

The IA-8 satellite, launched last summer, is expected to provide bandwidth and connectivity to MediaFlo USA’s transmitter sites. Qualcomm is building a network to offer mobile TV services based on its proprietary MediaFlo technology. Verizon Wireless has announced plans to use Qualcomm’s MediaFlo network to offer mobile TV services, and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and LG Electronics Co. Ltd. recently announced plans to build phones for the offering.

Last April, Crown Castle Mobile Media leased capacity on SES Americom’s AMC-9 satellite to support its DVB-H network rollout. The company’s Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld network is expected to directly compete with Qualcomm’s MediaFlo offering.
