Alltel, Atom announce contest for cell phone videos

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.—Alltel Corp. is teaming with broadband entertainment company Atom Entertainment Inc. on a contest for videos shot with mobile phones.

The promotion, which is tied to the carrier’s new “My Circle” calling feature, encourages users to record videos of their friends and family members with their handsets. Ten finalists will win $1,000 each; the winner of the $5,000 grand prize will be chosen in September.

“This is our first contest for video shot on mobile phones,” said AtomFilms General Manager Scott Roesch, “and we are excited to see the innovative and creative content that is submitted.”

The move underscores the growing number of cell phones that are capable of recording video.

The contest also comes on the heels of news that Italian filmmakers shot a 90-minute documentary using a video-capable cell phone, according to reports.
