Energizer to charge cell phones with AA batteries

ST. LOUIS—Battery vendor Energizer Inc. announced a new product the company said will allow cell phone users to charge their phones with two of the company’s e2 Lithium AA batteries. The company’s new Energi To Go portable cell phone charger is expected to be available in September through various retail outlets for $20.

“More and more consumers are cutting the cord. They are on the run and don’t have time to wait at a wall outlet for their phone batteries to charge,” said Jeff Ziminski, Energizer’s vice president of marketing. “We expect Energizer Energi To Go to fill a consumer need as an essential and economical way to guarantee automatic power to talk; power to charge, anywhere, anytime.”

Energizer said its new Energi To Go product includes a reusable charger, a gadget that will connect the charger to a phone’s charging slot, and two Energizer batteries. The company said its phone tip connectors will be able to fit around 100 phone models from manufacturers including Nokia Corp., Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and others.

Energizer is not the first company to introduce a portable cell phone charger. Compact Power Systems L.L.C., a subsidiary of ESI Enterprises Inc., has been selling its Cellboost product for several years through various retail outlets.
