Cingular adds HSDPA-equipped 8525 to smart phone stable

ATLANTA—Cingular Wireless L.L.C. added an HSDPA-enabled smart phone known as the 8525 Pocket PC to its line-up, which it is selling for $250 with a mail-in rebate and two-year contract. The 8525 is the first HSDPA-enabled smart phone in Cingular’s portfolio.

The 8525 appears to be another device for the so-called prosumer market, as it provides Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Mobile operating system with Direct Push Technology for e-mail—useful to both enterprise and consumer—and includes multimedia capabilities for entertainment.

Cingular arranges its portfolio into six device categories and, perhaps to attract attention to its smart phone category, it also is offering Nokia Corp.’s E62 for $50 with a mail-in rebate. The E62, a productivity and entertainment device, debuted at Cingular in September at $150.

The 8525 device offers both QWERTY keyboard and touch-screen inputs, as well as integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and infrared connectivity, and Cingular’s TeleNav GPS Navigator service. The Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system provides Media Player, Internet Explorer and Outlook and also provides the Messaging and Security Feature Pack, which enables remote support for an enterprise’s IT policies.
