TV Guide, Roundbox to make mobile TV guide

TV Guide Mobile Entertainment Inc. and mobile broadcast software company Roundbox Inc. said they signed an exclusive agreement that calls for them to develop and co-market an Electronic Service Guide for mobile television.

Roundbox is providing its software to the effort while TV Guide’s parent company Gemstar is providing its user interface design, data assets and intellectual property portfolio. In addition, the offering supports various bearer networks including Qualcomm Inc.’s FLO technology, DVB-H, 3GPP2 broadcast and multicast services, 3GPP multimedia broadcast multicast service and unicast streaming.

“We’re excited about the opportunities that exist for our company in the mobile broadcast market,” said Bob Shallow, vice president and general manager, TV Guide Mobile Entertainment. “Our partnership with a mobile broadcast expert like Roundbox, with their innovative technologies, will help us reach consumers wherever they access TV content and further our leadership in the area of television guidance.”

TV Guide Mobile and Roundbox worked together at this year’s CTIA conference to provide a proof-of-concept client-server system for delivering an Electronic Service Guide.

While still in its infancy, a lot of money is being invested in mobile video.
