Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called on Telefonica SA’s Venezuelan mobile-phone operator, Movistar Venezuela, and Digitel GSM to cooperate with government efforts to assist 130,000 people displaced by heavy rains or face expropriation.
“The enabling law will obligate them, and if they don’t comply, we expropriate them,” a government statement sent by e- mail said, citing Chavez’s comments made last night on state television.
Chavez is seeking approval by the pro-government National Assembly to rule by decree for 12 months through an “enabling law.” Chavez said he needs the emergency powers for the fourth time since taking office in 1999 to build homes and infrastructure destroyed by the rains.
