NTT Docomo | January 28, 2011 | Press Release
TOKYO, JAPAN, January 28, 2011 — NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today a new 10-year environmental vision under which the DOCOMO Group intends to help lower carbon footprints, strengthen recycling and protect biodiversity, including cutting its fiscal 2020 carbon footprint to less than 90 percent of the group’s fiscal 2008 level.
DOCOMO’s eco-minded plan is based on the environmental vision that the NTT Group announced in November 2010. DOCOMO is now completing a previous vision that was announced in 2007, under which the company expects to achieve all final targets by the end of the current fiscal year ending this March 31.
Under the new vision, DOCOMO not only will reduce the carbon footprint of its own business, it also will develop services that help to reduce carbon emissions throughout society, and it will actively encourage employees to participate in green activities.
Carbon reduction
The DOCOMO Group expects to lower its fiscal 2020 carbon footprint by 10 percent (more than 120,000 tons) compared to fiscal 2008. In addition, DOCOMO’s green mobile technologies and services are expected to help cut some 10 million tons of CO2 emissions throughout Japan in fiscal 2020.
Increased recycling
The vision also sets goals for increased recycling, including the reuse of mobile devices and equipment, and the reduced production of paper waste. By fiscal 2020, DOCOMO aims to recycle more than 98 percent of its total waste, meaning less than two percent would enter final disposal. A target of less than 1% final disposal has been set for the reuse and recycling of used communication equipment. Paper use will be cut by more than 25% (9,500 tons) from the fiscal 2008 level.
Preserving biodiversity
Through socially responsible business and various initiatives, DOCOMO will work to protect the earth’s biodiversity, understanding that the company’s activities impact the global ecosystem. DOCOMO will work with stakeholders to pursue biodiversity initiatives outside of the company’s business scope and then disclose the outcomes.
