Mobile subscribers reach 46.14M in Colombia; Comcel leads

Colombia ended June with more than 46.147 million mobile-phone subscribers in mobile telephony, which is a small growth of 1.78% compared with March and corresponds to 100.2 subscribers per 100 inhabitants, says a report conducted by the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications.

At the end of the second quarter of 2011, the wireless provider Cellular Communication SA Comcel has the largest market share with 66.49%, followed by Telefónica Móviles Colombia SA with 21.56% and Colombia Movil SA with 11.95%.

In June, the base of postpaid mobile subscribers showed a slight increase and ended the period reaching 16.99% market share. On the other hand, prepaid subscribers declined slightly from 83.21% in the first quarter to 83.01% in the second quarter.

In the prepaid segment, Comcel leads with 68.79%, followed by Telefónica Móviles Colombia with 19.37% and Colombia Movil with 12.04%. Comcel also is No. 1 in the postpaid category. The carrier has a 56.23% stake, followed by Telefónica Móviles with 32.26% and Colombia Movil at 11.51%.

Mobile Internet subscribers
In the second quarter, Colombia counted more than 2.479 million subscribers to mobile Internet. It is a variation of 12.82% over the first quarter of 2011 and a 119.79% over the same period previous year.

3G mobile phone use is growing, going from 12.6% in the first quarter to 16.9% in the second quarter.
