HetNet News: Time Warner expands Wi-Fi in NYC

Time Warner Cable is expanding its Wi-Fi network in New York to up to 10,000 hotspots across the city by the end of this year, and offering temporary free access during Major League Baseball’s All-Star Week.

The company said that it already has more than 1,700 public hotspots in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, and that more than 1,000 additional locations will be added in Manhattan by the middle of this month. Time Warner is the official Wi-Fi provider of MLB’s All-Star Week in NYC from July 12-16, and access to those 2,700-plus hotspots will be free during the event dates.

Time Warner has more than 75,000 TWC Wi-Fi hotspots in the tri-state area of New York, New Jerse and Connecticut, which are available on a pay-as-you-go basis, or at no additional charge for the cable company’s customers with its standard Internet package or above. The company also has deployments underway in Austin, Texas; Kansas City; Hawaii; and Charlotte, N.C.

Meanwhile, Cox Business is launching Wi-Fi service across its national footprint. The company has already provided managed Wi-Fi services for hotels in a portion of its footprint, including Las Vegas. Cox said it has 2,000 hospitality customers and serves more than 250,000 guest rooms with its TV, Internet and voice services – now the company is offering a standard Wi-Fi option across all of its markets, with a direct connection to its fiber optic or hybrid fiber coax networks.

Cox Business today announced Hospitality WiFi will be available across the company’s national footprint later this summer. A managed Wi-Fi service for hotels and large multi-location organizations, Cox said the division offers a Wi-Fi experience with a professional network design, integrated wireless network monitoring; and guest troubleshooting and support.

The company is using Cisco’s service provider Wi-Fi solution.

Ruckus Wireless announced that it is supplying its Smart Wi-Fi products to 11 hockey arenas in Sweden for fan, staff and visitor Wi-Fi access, in partnership with IT supplies and system integrator Icecon.
