Good's mobility index shows increase in BI, CRM enterprise apps

The latest quarterly report on enterprise mobility from Good Technology showed “significant growth” in activations of secure instant messaging (IM), customer relationship management (CRM) and business intelligence (BI) applications that have usually been relegated to desktop access. Good found that the total number of enterprise app activations increased 20% quarter-over-quarter.

Document editing continued to be the most widely used app, and the top app for smartphones is secure IM. BI apps had more than 200% growth quarter-over-quarter in activations and Good said that CRM apps are coming into wider use, with activations in its customer base up by a factor of seven quarter-over-quarter.

This is Good’s eighth quarterly report and is based on internal data aggregated from its customer base that represents more than 5,000 companies around the world.

Good noted that it also saw a shift in the Android vs. iOS breakdown of applications. Android apps are gaining momentum, garnering 12% of total activations and taking four percentage points of share from the dominant iOS. Good noted that Android devices are growing as well, with activations at 32%, an increase of 5%.

“It’s more apparent than ever that cross platform enterprise mobility is disrupting legacy desktop and mobile environments,” said Christy Wyatt, chairman and CEO of Good Technology, in a statement. “We continue to see companies deploying a breadth of devices and a diverse set of applications to drive higher value for their business, across all vertical markets.  Most exciting to us is the rapidly growing segment of customers creating and deploying their own secure enterprise apps, across platforms, to fuel their business needs.”

The report also found that the government and public sector had an increase of 5% in total iPad activations and that the gap between tablet app activations and smartphone app activations is closing. Good found that 58% of apps were activated on tablets and 42% on smartphones.
