Family plans focus of T-Mobile unlimited data price cut, 10 GB promotion
T-Mobile US is going back to the well, rolling out a promotional family plan the carrier used twice before with great success.
The carrier said customers can now activate up to four lines of service, each having access to unlimited calling, messaging and 10 gigabytes of unthrottled data per line for $120 per month. The plan prices the first two lines at $100, allows the third to be added at $20 and gives the fourth line for free.
Customers needing more data can tap the carrier’s “unlimited” data for smartphones priced at $150 for four lines of service, with additional lines priced at $30 per month for up to 12 total lines. T-Mobile US had previously said it may limit data speeds on unlimited plans once a customer uses 23 gigabytes of data per month.
The offers are available to new and existing Simple Choice postpaid customers, with the carrier at this point not offering an expiration date on the offer. Customers signing up for the capped data plans are able to keep the plan for as long as they are T-Mobile US customers, while the unlimited data promotion is said to be good “for a minimum of at least two years.”
T-Mobile US originally rolled out the 10 GB promotion last summer, which the carrier later said was its most popular promotion ever offered. The carrier brought the program back in October, before ditching it in November in favor of family plans with 6 GB of unthrottled data per line at the same price point.
The unlimited data move looks set to better position T-Mobile US against rival AT&T Mobility, which recently rolled out an unlimited data option for customers also selecting parent company AT&T’s DirecTV or U-verse television service. AT&T Mobility recently said it added 2.2 million net connections during the fourth quarter of 2015, just piping T-Mobile US’ 2.1 million net connection additions. However, T-Mobile US easily outpaced AT&T Mobility in terms of higher-revenue generating postpaid growth.
