Smartfren is the first mobile operator in Indonesia to deploy LTE and VoLTE. The deployment of VoLTE has been fast, as the operator wants to go past its CDMA legacy. Next will be the deployment of Wi-Fi Calling to complement VoLTE. Christian Daigneault, Smartfren’s CTO, told us about Smartfren VoLTE experience: “VoLTE offers better voice quality, due to the HD voice vocoder, which we did not have in CDMA. This brings improved voice quality and fast call setup.”
Conversational video has an increasing appeal as a complement to voice. Christian added: “User surveys indicate that video conferencing capability is the most impressive capability in VoLTE. It’s more challenging to bring video with good quality to all types of devices. Initially we launched VoLTE without video, for the first months, because we were still optimizing the video quality. We later added video functionality, and not only one-to-one video, but one-to-many video conferencing. The video service is still new; we have to see what the growth of usage will be. Customers like to try the service; it is yet to be seen how many will continue to use it.”
