T-Mobile Un-carrier 12 tackles unlimited with new One plans

As part of its Un-carrier 12 initiative, T-Mobile is set to offer new “One” plans providing “unlimited” services at discounted rates

Forgoing its usual pre-event hype, T-Mobile US today unveiled its Un-carrier 12 initiative focused on the increasingly heated topic of unlimited data.
The latest deal is centered on a new set of rate plans, dubbed “T-Mobile One,” that provide for “unlimited” everything at prices lower than the carrier currently charges. Specifically, the plans provide for unlimited domestic voice calling, text messaging, on-network LTE data and mobile hot spot service at 2G network speeds. Similar to its current unlimited data plans, T-Mobile US reserves the right to limit network speeds for customers using in excess of 26 gigabytes of data per month.
In addition, the plans include the carrier’s array of extras like Simple Global, which provides for unlimited text messaging, data roaming and 20 cents per minute calling in more than 140 countries; Mobile Without Borders, which allows customers to access their rate plan features when traveling in Canada and Mexico; and other features.
Pricing for the new plans is set at $75 for the first smartphone line of service, $55 for the second line, $25 per line for lines three through eight and $35 per line beginning with line nine. The carrier is offering a $5 discount per line for customers signing up for its AutoPay feature.
Tablets can be tagged onto a plan at $20 per line with AutoPay, though are priced at the $70 rate if they are the only device on the plan. Wearables can be added at $5 per month for unlimited access to 2G-based data speeds, or $15 per month if it’s the only device on an account. Customers can also purchase 5 GB of high-speed mobile hot spot service for $15.
T-Mobile US’ current unlimited plans are priced at $95 for the first line, $75 for the second line and $55 for additional lines. Those plans do include 14 GB of high-speed mobile hot spot service, as well as the carrier’s other offerings, including Simple Global and Mobile Without Borders.
In terms of T-Mobile US’ Binge On video streaming service, the new plans include unlimited standard-definition quality streaming, with customers able to purchase unlimited high-definition quality streaming for $25 per month per line. The carrier’s current unlimited data plans allow customers to stream high-definition video up to the 26 GB overall usage limit before possibly being hit with network speed throttling.
The carrier did run a since discontinued promotion earlier this year offering four lines of unlimited services for $150, with additional lines priced at $30 per month for up to 12 total lines.
The new plans are scheduled to be available beginning Sept. 6, with prepaid customers set to receive the option “in the future.”
The latest “un-carrier” move comes on the heels of Verizon Wireless and more recently AT&T Mobility launching new rate plans designed to eliminate data overage fees.
T-Mobile US initially jumped on the Verizon Wireless move, filing comments with the Federal Communications Commission claiming the changes should not be construed as positive for consumers. In its filing with the FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau, Kathleen Ham, SVP for government affairs at T-Mobile US, cited Verizon Wireless’ plan changes as copying those of T-Mobile US, but without the same consumer benefits.
