In today’s fast-paced business world, connectivity is king. Enterprises, especially those with sprawling outdoor operations in agriculture, transportation, sporting venues, and campuses, depend on seamless communication. These businesses require expanded coverage, rock-solid reliability, scalability, and unwavering performance to support business-critical applications that require readily available bandwidth, low latency, and superior security. Private cellular is a technology that performs exceedingly well outdoors, and empowers businesses to improve operations and reduce costs.

Private Cellular vs Wi-Fi

While Wi-Fi is a ‘go-to’ solution that is ideal for office settings, small indoor facilities, and carpeted areas, it falters in outdoor deployments.

From an economics standpoint, private cellular is far more cost-effective for outdoor environments. According to research conducted by the On-Go Alliance, for every cellular access point needed to provide coverage outdoors, it would take no less than 10 Wi-Fi access points to cover the same area. And that doesn’t count the expense of laying fiber to get backhaul for those individual access points. On top of this, select private cellular network providers can offer a mesh solution, further extending coverage while saving on equipment expenses. This unique capability further provides significant value to businesses that are looking to support growth strategies or an expanding footprint. With less hardware, more reliable coverage, and superior flexibility, a private cellular solution offers significant financial benefits over W-Fi.

Flexibility

For businesses that are looking to leverage reliable connectivity in short-term situations, such as outdoor festivals, temporary industrial operations, or other on-demand assignments, a private cellular network offers an instant solution to deliver reliable connectivity, without a heavy price tag that would render the whole effort moot. Modern private cellular services can be quickly implemented just by accessing a power source, standing up an antenna, and connecting devices to the network. All of this can be accomplished by internal IT staff in under an hour. The inherent security within the network remains viable for short-term assignments, giving businesses the full capabilities and benefits of the private network.

Performance Advantages

A private cellular network is ideal for organizations that rely on data. Contrasted with a public cellular network, which prioritizes downloads to satisfy public consumption—such as TikTok videos or football highlights—the private network gives businesses the ability to upload huge swaths of data, as well as expediate downloads. This bi-directional control gives businesses confidence to ascertain that IoT devices collect and transmit data efficiently, ensure uninterrupted operations of automated machinery and software, and maintain operational efficiency—especially in a harsh environment.

Security

Truth be told, private cellular networks are more secure than Wi-Fi or a public cellular infrastructure. Encryption is far more robust in a cellular network compared to Wi-Fi, and businesses have the ability to limit who has access to the network, reducing attack vectors and the potential for breaches. These features are vital to an enterprise that must collect and transmit mission-critical data from sensors that are geographically disparate, such as from transportation, mining, and agricultural assets out in the field, or for any organization that works in a highly regulated environment. There is little question that private cellular technology provides the best solution to receive and transmit sensitive data in an enterprise environment.

Conclusion

In a world where connectivity is the lifeblood of modern enterprises, private cellular networks have emerged as the superior choice for fulfilling the connectivity needs of enterprises, especially those that support outdoor operations. These networks provide superior, high-performance through balanced download and upload speeds, low latency, and enhanced security. Though Wi-Fi and public cellular networks each have their strengths, they simply do not compare with the reliability, security, scalability, and economics associated with a private cellular solution.

As businesses increasingly rely on data collection from IoT devices, automated equipment, and AI applications to drive their growth and competitiveness, the importance of a reliable and secure network cannot be overstated. Private cellular networks not only meet these requirements, but also provide cost-effective solutions that can streamline operations and boost overall efficiency. In these demanding times, private cellular networks have become the backbone of success, ensuring that businesses can thrive in the era of constant connectivity.
