Google Fiber deploys Nokia’s 25G PON solution

With the 25G PON solution, Google Fiber can provide up to 10x faster broadband speeds, says Nokia

Google Fiber is deploying Nokia’s 25G passive optical network (PON) solution to bolster its existing fiber network and deliver a new 20 Gig broadband service through its GFiber Labs, an innovation hub focused on improving home internet. According to Nokia, with its 25G PON solution, Google Fiber can provide broadband speeds that are up to 10x faster than most other fiber networks.

“With our 25G PON solution Google Fiber can reuse its existing fiber network to quickly and cost effectively deliver the next generation of gigabit services to their customers. We’re proud to continue supporting Google Fiber on its quest to build the foundation of tomorrow’s internet,” commented Geert Heyninck, general manager of broadband networks at Nokia.

The Finnish vendor announced its 25G PON starter kit solution last year, and first trialed the technology at the beginning of this year with Spanish operator Telefonica, achieving symmetric speeds of 20 Gbps. Telefonica, at the time, had fiber deployed to almost 60 million homes across its business units, and the trial validated that current GPON and XGS-PON broadband technologies can co-exist on the same fiber with the 25G PON.

Fast broadband is necessary to support the advanced applications like AR/VR and cybersecurity that are becoming more common in the home and at business of all sizes.

As part of the 25G PON implementation, GFiber has also introduced Nokia’s Lightspan and Altiplano solution, which increases service agility with operational efficiency. The fiber access node supports multiple fiber technologies including GPON, XGS-PON, 25GS-PON and Point-to-Point Ethernet to deliver a wide range of services.

Currently, GFiber Labs uses the 25G PON technology to support UMKC and United Way of Utah County. Residential customers will get access to the new service by the end of the year, the companies added.

“The age of multi-gig broadband services is here and we’re committed to ensuring all of our customers can benefit from the incredible potential it brings,” said Liz Hsu, senior director of product & billing at Google Fiber. “We believe investments in advanced network technologies like Nokia’s 25G PON solution will help catalyze change, drive innovation and revolutionize the user experience.”
