MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-Google Inc. has launched a new search service that delivers results only from Web pages that are customized for the small screens of mobile phones.
Google Mobile Web Search indexes sites that use XHTML technology, a hybrid of HTML and XML that is designed to deliver mobile applications. Users with Web-enabled phones can access the service from the company’s portal on their handsets by selecting the “Mobile Web (Beta)” option.
Unlike Google’s mobile search service for WML, the new offering allows users to search for images from their phones. The Internet giant also offers a short message service-based search that delivers local business information.
