Lucent to upgrade Russian 450 MHz network with EV-DO

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia-Delta Telecom, a 450 MHz mobile operator in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, selected Lucent Technologies Inc. to expand and add 1x EV-DO support to Delta’s Sky Link-branded CDMA 450 MHz network.

The project, which the companies plan to complete by the end of 2005, includes increasing the capacity and coverage of the CDMA 450 MHz network in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region. It also includes the Lucent Super-Distributed Home Location Register, a key element of Lucent’s Internet Procotol Multimedia Subsystem technology.

The EV-DO network will enable Delta Telecom subscribers in St. Petersburg with high-speed mobile data services at speeds of up to 2.4 megabits per second.

ZAO Sky Link was established in June 2003 to consolidate regional NMT-450 operators and to implement a federal cellular communications network based on CDMA2000 technology for the 450 MHz frequency band. CDMA 450 MHz networks under the Sky Link trademark are now deployed in 19 regions of Russia. Delta Telecom in 2002 became the first Sky Link operator to offer 1x technology in 450 MHz spectrum.
