HELSINKI, Finland-Nokia Telecommunications of Espoo, Finland, has won contracts to supply infrastructure equipment to two of Hong Kong’s six new personal communication services providers.
P-Plus Communications Ltd. and New World PCS Ltd. will deploy DCS 1800 systems, which use a form of Global System for Mobile communications technology.
Nokia will supply both companies with switching platforms, base stations, base station controllers and comprehensive network management systems.
The P-Plus contract is valued at more than $30 million; the value of the New World contract was not announced.
The P-Plus consortium includes Telecom Finland Ltd., Star Telecom of Hong Kong, Taiwan’s Electrical Wire and Cable Group and the Shanghai, China, PTT. New World PCS is part of New World Telephone Holdings Group of Hong Kong.
Two of the six new licensees are current operators: Hutchison Telephone Co. Ltd. and Pacific Link Communications Ltd. Other licensees are Mandarin Communications Ltd. and People’s Telephone Co. Ltd.
The Hong Kong Office of the Telecommunications Authority awarded the new 10-year licenses at the end of July.
