SEOUL, South Korea-Korea Mobile Telecom has changed its name to SK Telecom, to reflect the company’s growing international presence.
The name SK Telecom also honors the company’s affiliation with Sunkyong Ltd., one of the country’s five largest conglomerates.
SK Telecom is the largest paging provider in India. It is about to launch service in Brazil and hopes to be part of the U.S. personal communications services market.
SK Telecom has identified opportunities for the company in multimedia communications, wireless cable TV and on-line services industries, said Dr. Jung Uck Seo, president of SK Telecom.
“By developing an expertise in these areas, and offering an expanded range of services to consumers both domestically and abroad, SK Telecom will truly become a global information and communications corporation,” Seo said.
SK Telecom operates a Code Division Multiple Access cellular network in Korea, serving 78 cities and reaching 80 percent of the South Korean population.
