SAO PAULO, Brazil-Lucent Technologies Inc. next month will begin construction on a cellular equipment manufacturing plant and global provisioning center in Brazil. The company said more than 300 people will be employed there.
Lucent said it will use the center to develop software and systems needed by its customers in Brazil. The facility, which also will house a training center, will have the capacity to produce more than 500 digital and analog cell sites per year. Production will begin late this year.
“The gigantic market potential was definitely a deciding factor in choosing Brazil as the location for this plant,” said Art Medeiros, president of Lucent Technologies Network Systems in the Caribbean and Latin America. “The unprecedented consumer demand for mobile telephony services will require current providers to expand their networks and emerging wireless services providers, such as B-band consortia, to build entire new networks.”
