Verizon, Sprint cater to Hispanic market

BEDMINSTER, N.J.-Carriers continued to court the Hispanic market with two new content offerings announced Wednesday.

Verizon Wireless launched a new version of its “Get it Now” portal that allows users to access news, ring tones and games in Spanish. The deck offers Hispanic-themed content including Mexican Soccer League scores and trivia as well as a text-messaging poll supporting an “American Idol”-style TV show on Telemundo.

Meanwhile, Sprint PCS launched a Spanish-language weather application for its Vision customers. Clima Weathernews provides weather information for cities and airports as well as radar images, moon phases and sunrise/sunset notices. The downloadable application is offered at $3.50 per month.

“The Hispanic market is one of the fastest-growing segments in mobile communications,” said John Burris, director of Sprint’s Wireless Data Services.
