PARIS—French vendor Alcatel said it opened a third-generation center in Taiwan, calling it the first fully functional 3G/UMTS system in Taiwan and the first member of the company’s 3G Reality Center program.
The Taipei-based 3G Reality Center offers Alcatel and its partners, including local content and applications developers, a live environment for developing and testing mobile applications for GPRS and UMTS systems, the company said. Alcatel said the center will help in the commercial rollout of 3G services in Taiwan and provide other 3G-specific assistance, including data transfer information, incubation of personnel, and applications and services.
In other Asian news, Alcatel said it won a $114 million GSM expansion contract with China’s Jiangsu Mobile Communications. The contract, which is the sixth expansion Alcatel has provided to the operator, will increase Alcatel’s infrastructure capacity in the province to about 8 million subscribers.
