Merrill Lynch says sell U.S. Cellular

NEW YORK—Merrill Lynch downgraded its ratings on U.S. Cellular Corp. and its parent company, Telephone & Data Systems Inc., from neutral to sell pointing out slowing subscriber growth in the wireless industry, increasing competition and falling roaming revenues.

The investment firm also noted U.S. Cellular might run into difficulty generating a positive return on its recent purchase of PrimeCo’s Chicago wireless network.
