DoCoMo mulls tie-up with SingTel, KTF

TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo, the largest mobile operator in Japan, said it is in talks with KTF of South Korea, and with Singapore Telecommunications as potential partners in Asia. NTT DoCoMo has been seeking another Asian partner through which it can promote its popular i-mode and third-generation (3G) W-CDMA services.

Keiji Tachikawa, president of NTT DoCoMo, has repeatedly said NTT DoCoMo would like to set up cooperative relations with Asian carriers. In Asia, NTT DoCoMo holds a minor stake in Hutchinson Telephone in Hong Kong and KG Telecom in Taiwan.

However, because NTT DoCoMo ran a huge loss from its past overseas investments, the firm may not consider having financial relations with these carriers. A spokesman of NTT DoCoMo confirmed on 9 July that DoCoMo is in talks with these two Asian carriers; however, nothing has been determined as of this time.
