Sprint PCS adds Cometa as roaming partner

Sprint PCS reported a deal with Cometa Networks that will allow Wi-Fi Access subscribers to roam onto select Cometa hot spots, which are expected to include more than 250 locations in Seattle by the end of this year.

Sprint PCS, which announced its PCS Wi-Fi Access initiative in late July, said it expects to launch the service later this month in hundreds of locations across the country with high concentrations of business travelers. The carrier previously announced roaming agreements with Wayport Inc. and Airpath Wireless and said it would also build out and operate its own Wi-Fi Zones as part of an 800-location launch. Sprint PCS plans to cover more than 2,100 locations by the end of this year.

The initial service will require customers to purchase a standalone Wi-Fi-compatible PC Card, though Sprint PCS said it is looking into offering cards that combine both access to Wi-Fi networks and the carrier’s CDMA2000 1x PCS Vision service.
