Report: Sprint developing combined Wi-Fi/PCS service

Sprint Corp. is reportedly developing a new wireless service that will allow customers to seamlessly roam between the company’s wide area wireless network and ever-expanding wireless local area network.

Sprint President Len Lauer told the Wall Street Journal that the converged wide area and local area wireless service would allow customers to use either PCS or Wi-Fi service at home using one phone, and the offering could launch as soon as next year.

The development plans, which were discussed at a cable television trade show earlier this week, follow news that Sprint is currently serving more than 250,000 wireless voice customers through cable partnerships.
