Digi introduces gateway for Cingular’s EDGE network

MINNETONKA, Minn.-Digi International introduced its Digi Connect Remote Gateway GSM product, which is a serial-to-wireless GSM EDGE gateway that connects remote serial devices via Cingular Wireless’ EDGE network.

The company said the product provides a connectivity alternative for devices with serial ports, such as power meters, remote terminal units, traffic controllers, security panels and industrial programmable lock controllers.

“The introduction of the Digi Connect RG GSM device opens up Cingular’s Wireless WAN Connectivity Service to an expanded group of users because they now have a choice between a serial or Ethernet connection to link their IT network to our EDGE-based wireless offering,” said Hamish Caldwell, executive director of Cingular Wireless Business Markets Group. “The Digi line of intelligent gateways in conjunction with the Wireless WAN Connectivity Service from Cingular provide an ideal high-speed wireless back-up or primary solution for applications for such areas as utilities, traffic management, and industrial automation.”

The new product extends Digi’s remote device management solutions portfolio, which includes the recently announced Digi Connect WAN GSM product.
