Google to add wireless support to Gmail

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-Google Inc. will add post office protocol support to its Gmail service, allowing customers to wirelessly check their accounts on certain handsets.

The Web search company will roll out POP support during the next few weeks, extending its free Web mail service to personal digital assistants, BlackBerrys and mobile phones with POP-enabled e-mail clients, such as Microsoft Outlook.

Google launched a beta version of its free Gmail service in March, and the new mobile access will also be free. Before POP support, users could access accounts only while online and through a Web-based interface.
