Cingular, Sprint add to handset portfolios

Cingular Wireless and Sprint PCS both launched new handsets Wednesday.

LG Mobile Phones and Cingular Wireless L.L.C. have launched the new L1400 camera phone.

The clamshell-style GSM/GPRS phone features media capabilities, an external display with external caller ID and an integrated VGA camera. An external side button allows users to snap photos and view them without opening the phone.

The phone also includes instant messaging, multimedia messaging, two-way short messaging services, voice-activated dialing, Java support, a 255-entry phonebook and advanced sound capabilities.

In other U.S. market handset news, Sprint Corp. launched its first Microsoft Windows Mobile-based smart phone. The SP-i600, designed by Samsung Corp., will be available at Sprint stores in early October for a suggested retail price of $650.

Applications available through the Windows Mobile software include Pocket Outlook, Pocket Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger, Microsoft Windows Media Player and ActiveSync technology. The device also comes packaged with Audible Inc.’s AudiblePlayer audio content application and Handango’s InHand catalog of applications and digital media content.
