Skype’s new mobile voice over Internet Protocol offering is receiving decidedly mixed reviews.
Released less than a week ago, Skype for Pocket PC 1.0 allows users of Wi-Fi-enabled personal digital assistants to make calls from any Wi-Fi hot spot. The software expands on Skype’s popular VoIP free downloadable VoIP product, which provides free voice service over the Internet between Skype users.
But the mobile version of SkypeOut, which allows users to make calls to non-Skype phones for a fee, doesn’t work well on Hewlett-Packard IPaq devices and Dell Axim handhelds, according to reports. When the software launches on those devices, users report hearing only a buzzing noise.
A Skype spokesperson said the company is working to rectify the bug and hopes to have the issue resolved within a week.
