Sprint, Mediacom agreement could lead to wireless reseller deal

Sprint Corp. announced a multiyear agreement with the country’s eighth-largest cable operator Mediacom Communications Corp., enabling Mediacom to provide telephony services in nearly all of its markets currently covering 2.7 million homes in 23 states.

The telephony services will initially use Sprint’s wired network to provide Voice over Internet Protocol-based telephone service beginning in the first half of 2005 with the possibility of adding Sprint PCS’ wireless service to its offering in the future.

“This strategic alliance with Sprint will permit our company to offer our customers a powerful bundle of broadband products in one package, on one bill, from one provider and at a lower cost,” explained Rocco Commisso, chairman and chief executive officer of Mediacom. “With this agreement in place, we also have the opportunity to explore offering Sprint wireless phone service to our customers.”

Sprint PCS currently has agreements to provide wireless service to a number of third-party companies, including Virgin Mobile USA L.L.C., Qwest Communications International Inc. and AT&T Corp., through reseller and mobile virtual network operator models.

Financial terms of the agreement were not released.
