China Telecom Global among first service provider to deploy global SD-WAN service
China Telecom Global (CTG), a multinational telecom service provider, announced it has chosen Versa Networks as its main vendor for its software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) and software-defined security (SD-Security) solutions. CTG is among the first telecom service provider to deploy a SD-WAN service worldwide.
CTG is the biggest state-owned telecommunication company in China. Its SD-WAN service is based upon Versa’s virtualized network and security functions, which provide direct access to public cloud services like Microsoft Azure and Amazon. CTG will launch Versa’s network and security functions in 15 club hubs around the world to achieve “distributed reach and centralized control.”
“China Telecom Global serves an ever growing base of Chinese and other global corporations,” said Robert Zhu, senior director of Asia Pacific, Versa Networks. “As their customers realize the benefits that a cloud-native network architecture can offer in the way of increased business agility, cloud enablement and user experience, as well as cost savings, CTG will be well-positioned to be the network provider of choice. Versa is very excited to partner with CTG and enable their global customers to digitally transform their networks and overall business processes.”
CTG’s network allows Chinese businesses to scale their network globally. CTG’s SD-WAN service will allow customers to connect international branch offices through the internet, application identification, security and policy enforcement, according to the company. CTG expects the addition of Versa’s SD-WAN service will help businesses acquire more customers both nationally and internationally.
The service offering is currently available and expected to encompass more than 30 global cloud gateways by the end of the year throughout Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. Nodes have been installed at Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Los Angeles, among many other cities.

The news follows the announcement that both Telstra and Cisco are backing SD-WAN vendor VeloCloud’s $35 million Series D round, which will be used to manage carrier deployments at a large scale. The company also debuted a new partner program targeted at service providers that need to set up a SD-WAN solution within a month.
