SINGAPORE-Siemens AG said it has rolled out what it describes as the first GSM/GPRS module with integrated EDGE technology for high-speed data transfer.
The product, the MC75, can work in all GSM networks worldwide and has a USB port for plug-and-play functions. It is suitable for smart phones, personal digital assistants and other mobile computing devices, said Siemens.
The company also said it has created a communications solutions for office and mobile platforms and already has launched them in the Gulf of Mexico and Sweden. U.S. operator PetroCom is using it in the Gulf of Mexico, while Spring Mobil is in Sweden. PetroCom uses GSM/GPRS and EDGE technology to communicate between mainland and drilling rigs via a satellite link. Spring Mobil uses indoor communication coverage as well as virtual mobile PBXs, said Siemens.
