Verizon Wireless launches prepaid service bundle

Verizon Wireless launched its new Pay As You Go service bundle, which includes a Kyocera Corp. KX414 handset and flat rate pricing of 10 cents per minute with a 25-cent-per-call connection fee.

The new bundle is expected to retail for $130 and includes the Get It Now downloadable content-enabled KX414 color screen handset, a $15 setup card, and a choice between a $50 mail-in rebate or a $75 refill card. Customers who sign up for the carrier’s Auto-Refill payment plan will also receive a one-time $10 bonus credit. Verizon Wireless will also offer text messaging with the prepaid service at 5 cents for each message sent or received.

Three denominations of refill cards will be available for the service in $30, $50 and $75 increments, with refills completed over the phone or online offering expiration dates varying between 30 and 120 days depending on the total refill amount. Refill cards will also be available at authorized retail outlets, including Verizon Wireless Communication Stores, RadioShack Corp. and Circuit City stores.

The Pay As You Go service will supplant the carrier’s previously available FreeUp prepaid offering, which according to analysts’ reports served more than 2 million subscribers at the end of last year. The FreeUp service charged 30 cents per minute for weekday calls and 15 cents per minute for night and weekend calls, as well as calls made between Verizon Wireless customers.
