CHICAGO-BlackBerry fans enjoyed a rash of announcements around the Research In Motion Ltd. device at the company’s Wireless Enterprise Symposium, including new BlackBerry server features and additional applications and support for the platform.
First, RIM announced details of its next BlackBerry Enterprise Server, scheduled for release later this year. The company said the new version of the server will support over-the-air provisioning, allowing information technology managers remotely track BlackBerry devices and install new applications. The new server will also support wireless synchronization capabilities, additional security technologies, improved attachment and browser capabilities, and enhanced development tools.
“BlackBerry Enterprise Server v4.0 continues to build on the solid foundation that has already made BlackBerry the leading wireless platform for the enterprise with over 1 million subscribers,” said Mike Lazaridis, RIM’s president and co-chief executive officer. “Security, reliability, manageability and scalability remained high priorities for this new release along with many new functional enhancements, including wireless PIM synchronization, improved attachment viewing and enriched browsing.”
Separately, PalmSource Inc. announced it will release software to its Palm OS licensees that will support connections to a BlackBerry server. PalmSource previously announced its participation in RIM’s BlackBerry Connect program last year.
Other companies announcing new BlackBerry products and services included InfoByPhone, Flowfinity Wireless Inc., Onset Technology and others.
