Sun taps Babel to test Java apps

SUSSEX, United Kingdom-Sun Microsystems Inc. said it will use games testing company Babel Media for its new Java Verified wireless application program. Babel will test Java applications to ensure they work smoothly on a variety of handsets.

Motorola Inc., Nokia Corp., Siemens AG, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications L.P. and Sun Microsystems created the Java Verified program to provide a single unified test procedure and an accelerated route to market for Java applications. The program ensures that applications will run smoothly on a variety of handsets, a key requirement of wireless operators.

“There are a number of advantages for developers that use Babel for the Java Verified program,” said Juan Dewar, senior director of Sun’s consumer and mobile systems group. “Babel can tie in its existing services of localization, and porting into the program. Furthermore, Babel’s recently opened office in San Diego means it can work more closely with U.S. developers and publishers who wish to join the Java Verified program.”

Babel Media is also the sole accredited testing house for Vodafone’s Live! wireless data service.
