RF Connect, a specialist in cellular-based wireless solutions, announced it has been chosen by VIRginia International Raceway (VIR) to be the exclusive partner to design, deploy and manage cellular networks at the motorsport resort, RF Connect said in a release.
The project will consist of Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and Citizens Band Radio Service (CBRS) Private LTE networks to enable smartphone connectivity, public-safety and 2-way radio staff communications, vendor services and fan experience applications.
?Wireless plays an integral role in supporting the race day experience and connectivity for VIR operations,? said Frank Destito, Market Development Director at RF Connect. ?The new cellular network will provide 5-bar service for the major wireless carriers and deliver superior capacity and security compared to traditional Wi-Fi to wirelessly facilitate high-definition video, point-of-sale transactions and other services.?
RF Connect highlighted that DAS deployments have typically focused on ?top tier? racetracks which has left a cellular void at road courses like VIR that attract hundreds of thousands of fans and host events throughout the year. However, the company said that this trend is changing through evolved customer-owned, carrier-funded business models and, notably, the democratization of cellular spectrum afforded by CBRS which empowers venues to utilize it for myriad private network applications.
Connie Nyholm, owner and CEO of VIR, said : ?We are committed to ensuring a world-class visitor experience by adopting innovative technology. By partnering with RF Connect, we are deploying a leading-edge cellular network capable of scaling and supporting 5G and other future services.?
?We are proud to address the business and technology goals of VIR,? said Jeff Hipchen, Executive Vice President at RF Connect. ?Once the network is deployed, VIR fans, staff and vendors will greatly benefit.?
In addition to designing and deploying the network, RF Connect will broker the funding and participation of major wireless operators.
VIRginia International Raceway is located at the Virginia/North Carolina border. VIR offers amenities such as lodging, dining, an exclusive driver?s club, karting, off-road racing and shooting sports.
In September, RF Connect had ?joined the?CBRS Alliance, an industry organization focused on driving the development, commercialization and adoption of 3.5 GHz Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) shared spectrum solutions.
