Workforce update: State unemployment rates drop, layoffs expected at HP

Unemployment in most states fell slightly in April, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Department of Labor. The unemployment rate fell or held steady in every state except for Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, Utah, and Rhode Island. The national unemployment rate for April was 8.1%.

Today’s somewhat positive employment news comes amid reports that HP CEO Meg Whitman is preparing to announce up to 30,000 layoffs when her company releases earnings on Wednesday. Whitman has spoken about her company’s need to achieve “operational efficiencies” and when asked about layoffs by the press, Whitman has stated that “everything is on the table.”
