MURRAY HILL, N.J.—Lucent Technologies Inc. announced it is in the running to supply part of a multi-billion dollar contract for the Integrated Wireless Network program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security and Treasury. Lucent is competing as part of Lockheed Martin Corp.’s team. The selection process is in its final stage.
Lucent explained that the IWN’s focus is to improve national wireless communications among federal law enforcement agencies, providing more than 80,000 federal law enforcement users with a secure and reliable wireless communications network for voice, data and multimedia applications. In addition, the network is expected to foster interoperability between federal agencies and state, local and tribal public safety and Homeland Security entities.
“We are look forward to working with Lockheed Martin to address one of the most critical public safety needs for federal, state and local agencies—network interoperability,” stated Rick Miller, president of Government Solutions at Lucent.
In related news, Lucent announced that it is part a Boeing-led team competing for a $2 billion contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Secure Border Initiative, which is a plan to secure U.S. borders and reduce illegal immigration.
“The last few years we have focused on driving dramatic leaps forward in wireless and nanotechnology capabilities,” stated Gary Monetti, director of Strategic Alliances at Lucent. “We will work closely with the Boeing team to leverage breakthroughs in each of these disciplines to produce increasingly more efficient, miniaturized, capable, and cheaper communication and sensor technologies. We feel these types of revolutionary developments will be key aspects of improving the capability-to-cost relationships in border surveillance.”
The contract is expected to be awarded in September.
