Cingular, RadioShack team for Amber Alerts

ATLANTA- Cingular Wireless L.L.C. said that it teamed up with RadioShack Corp. to encourage people to sign up for Amber Alerts on their cell phones. The alerts include information on missing and abducted children.

The two companies announced a 2006 goal of signing up one million subscribers to wireless Amber Alerts, which are free and available to users of all major wireless carriers and many smaller carriers. The drive kicks off today in New York City.

In other Cingular news, the carrier said it put $144 million into its network in Louisiana in 2005. Cingular added 87 new cell sites, portable generators and back-up batteries, plus new data offerings in the hurricane-battered state.

New cell sites were added around New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Monroe, Alexandria, Lake Charles and Lafayette, the carrier reported. Cingular’s network was impacted by last season’s hurricanes, and the company said it had worked to rapidly restore service and re-open most of its stores within a few weeks after the hurricanes.
