Nokia, Pannon GSM demo W-CDMA call in Hungary

HELSINKI, Finland-Nokia Corp. and Hungarian operator Pannon GSM said they demonstrated the first public W-CDMA third-generation call in Hungary. A Pannon GSM executive using a Nokia 6650 phone made the call.

During the demonstration, streaming, Internet browsing, downloading and multimedia messaging service were on display using data speeds of up to 380 kilobits per second, Nokia said.

In addition, Nokia said it will provide a full W-CDMA testbed for Pannon GSM, including 3G radio and core network equipment.

Eastern European countries have been slower than their Western European counterparts in moving forward with W-CDMA rollouts. Some countries in the region have yet to award 3G licenses.
