Sharp to supply camera phones in China

TOKYO-Sharp, a leading mobile handset manufacturer in Japan, announced it will provide mobile handsets with built-in tiny cameras to China Mobile. Sharp has been providing mobile handsets with cameras to carriers in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Under its bilateral contract with Datang Telephone, a leading mobile handset manufacturer in China, Sharp will provide 100,000 camera handsets to the firm. Datang Telephone will sell the handsets in China.

In related Sharp News, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo said it would invest in developing FOMA third-generation (3G) handsets being manufactured by Sharp. DoCoMo is working to help reduce the size and cost of its FOMA handsets to spur demand for the service.

Since earlier this year, DoCoMo has been investing in handsets developed by Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, NEC and Panasonic. Sharp handsets will now also receive funding.

The Japanese operator said the total amount it will invest in FOMA handset development during fiscal years 2002 and 2003 is expected to reach US$349 million.
