China’s MII bans CDMA-based WLL systems

BEIJING-At a national conference on wireless telecommunications management, China’s Ministry of Information Industry (MII) vowed to strengthen frequency management, which will limit CDMA technology to China Unicom.

Fixed-line operators have been ordered to dismantle some of their wireless local loop operations, called Little Smart or Xiaolingtong. Targeted are a limited number of city-wide services based in the 450 MHz band using CDMA technology. Carriers have one month to conform to the orders.

The ministry seems determined to limit CDMA services to mobile carrier China Unicom.

Following the appointment of a new minister in early March, fixed-line carriers are worried the MII may gradually enforce a ban on Little Smart services.
